TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILDS TO MEET IN CITY
When the Dominion Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds meets in Christchurch next week several remits concerning juvenile delinquency will be submitted to delegates. The Castlecliffe-Gonville Guild (Wanganui) asks that the Government be urged to take steps to seek the cause of juvenile crime. A suggestion that mothers of school age children do not seek work outside the home is made in this remit. That the existing licensing laws be more strictly enforced, particularly in the case of teenagers, as child delinquency is largely attributed to alcohol, is another remit from the same guild. Unattended Children The Marewa Guild (Hastings) asks that it be Made an offence for children to be left unattended in a home or any building at any time. Dfental care and social security benefit should be extended to cover all students, according to a remit from the Onehunga Guild. A higher quality of New Zealand made shoes is sought by the Epsom Guild. The annual council meeting of the Dominion Federation will be opened by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr George Manning) on Wednesday morning at the Latimer Hall. After a heavy business agenda during the day a concert will be held in the evening. Business will be resumed on Thursday morning and afternoon. A social evening will be held at night. On Friday a bus trip round the Summit road has been arranged for delegates.
The executive meeting will be held on Tuesday, a day before the first session of the council meeting. Altogether 142 delegates and 500 observers will attend the twoday council meeting. They will represent 63 guilds in the three area federations of Auckland. Wellington and Christchurch.
The President of the Dominion Federation is Mrs G. A. C. Plumridge - (Christchurch) who has been a guild member for 23 years. The Dominion secretary is Mrs L. Collett (Christchurch) who is not seeking re-election and the Dominion treasurer is Mrs L Guthrie of Wellington.
Dominion officers expected to attend the meeting include the following:—Mesdames E. Arthur (Hastings) and H. Doran (Lower Hutt), vice-presidents; Mrs I. Guthrie (Wellington), treasurer; Mrs A. L. McKay (Greymouth), minute secretary; Mesdames A. Loader, R. Walker and E. Meldrum (Wellington), Mrs M. Redgrave (Auckland), Mrs J. Coxhill (Nelson), executive members. They will arrive in Christchurch at the beginning of the week to attend the executive meeting on Tuesday.
