“Promotion” Stands
The New Zealand Army's only peace-time lieutenant-general still retains that rank. Major O. H. Burn, Royal New Zealand Army Ordnance Corps, was promoted to the temporary rank of lieu-tenant-general as from July 26, 1958, and the announcement appeared in the Gazette on August 21. Lieutenant-General Burn’s demotion to the rank of temporary lieutenant-colonel and correction of the typographical error have not yet appeared in the Gazette. In the meantime messages of congratulation have been sent to him by facetious friends. But they are likely to puzzle him as he left New Zealand before the Gazette .notice appeared to take up a post as a United Nations military observer in the Middle East.
