Hastings Match Drawn

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) HASTINGS, September 5.

Sparkling batting by the West Indians, Worrell,* who made a century in 100 minutes, and Sobers, who hit 75 in 88 minutes, breathed life into the final day of the New Zealanders’ drawn festival match against A. E. R. Gilligan’s eleven at Hastings. With more than eight hours’ play lost because of rain, there was never any hope of a' decision on this ground, which has twice been waterlogged this week. The New Zealanders, continuing their first innings at 256 for four, lost the remaining six wickets in 35 minutes for 41 runs. The Australian left-arm spinner, G. Tribe, took five of them for 15 runs, giving him eight for 75 for the innings. Gilligan’s eleven hit 301 in 195 minutes, and the New Zealanders batted a second time during the remaining 40 minutes and made 74 for two.

Cave and Harford the bowling against Gilligan’s eleven and altogether, nine of the New’ Zealanders were to bowl. Cowdrey and Worrell moved things along easily until Cowdrey was well caught at short leg by Reid. Worrell and Sobers then hit 134 in 60 minutes. Between them they collected 12 out of the 14 sixes.

Of the bowlers, Sparling was the steadiest and then Reid, who had a hand in the fall of the first four wickets. He caught Sobers beautifully on the boundary almost behind the wicket, from a straight drive. The New Zealanders’ second innings was purely light-hearted, with the wicket-keeper gpooner bowling, and Compton checking racing results on the boundary with'a newspaper seller.
