Squash Rackets AUSTRALIANS IN SEMI-FINALS
N.Z. Titles At Oamaru
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 6. The four visting Australians were too good.for the New Zealand players, when the Dominion squash rackets championships were continued in Oamaru during the week-end, and will contest the semi-finals.
In the quarter-finals tonight the visitors won in straight sets, although B. Boys was extended by M. Gunn in two. The Australians had a w.der variety of shots and scored frequently off the mistakes of their opponents.
Some tricky reverse broach shots had the New Zealanders in trouble, while the play to the back of the court by the visitors was more than their opponents could cope with. A major upset came in the first round of the. men’s championship when D.‘ D. Mochan (Hawke’s Bay) the top seed and title-holder, was eliminated by P. Lindsay (Palmerston North) in a five-set. game. Lindsay was eliminated in the next round, by M. Gunn (Invercargill), in a four-set match. The junior title-holder, G. Davidson (Oamaru) retained his title when he beat G. Bird (Timaru) in four sets Results were:— Men’s Championship Second Round.—B. Boys (Australia) beat P. Mackenzie (Oamaru), 9-3, 9-1, 9-4; G. Davidson (Oamaru) beat D. G. Toohey (Australia) beat' W Green (Timaru), 9-7, 9-2, 9-7: N. Coe (Timaru) beat J. Arlidge (Palmerston North), 9-1, 9-2, 9-5; M. Gunn (Invercargill) beat P.
