Basketball REPRESENTATIVE GAMES

Sub-Associations’ Field Day The annual field day for representative teams from the five Canterbury Sub-associations was held on Saturday and although a strong, easterly wind made shooting difficult, all games were keenly contested and play was of a good standard. Banks Peninsula As a lunch-hour attraction, the annual fixture between the Executive and the Referees was played and resulted in a draw, 3-3. The Executive forwards, Mesdames O. Shannahan, H. Yates and A. French,, were frequently troubled' by the gusty wind and the many representative players who made up the bulk' of spectators were delighted with their fallibility. The Executive team dominated the game in the first spell mainly because of the intelligent play of the Executive centre, but its forwards were only able to net three of their 29 attempts. Iri the second spell the Referees’ team made several strong thrusts and Miss B. Armstrong and F. Adams were responsible for some fine saves. Although the score was some indication of the standard -of play it could scarcely be said to be a true one as the Referees’ had their tenth player as the scorer and timekeeper. Although it was often asserted that the referee, Mr F. Naughton, was not always strictly impartial, Executive members firmly denied that he was coerced in any way.
