RACING FETTLE AND MOON CREST WIN DOUBLE AT AVONDALE

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Sept. 7. . Fettle’s victory and the colI lapse of the third fancy Emphatic with three furlongs to go were features of the Avondale Cup race yesterday. It was Fettle’s first win since about this time last year. Emphatic had kept behind in the early rush and he was on a strong run when he knuckled over and nearly went down. By the time his rider had him stopped he was in a bad way and he was eventually transported from the i track with a severely damaged : foreleg joint. Fettle won the Coronation Handicap at the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting last season land afterwards the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie. His form in the meantime had not been up to much until he finished fourth last Saturday in the Coronation Handicap. F. P; Blackburn, who was to have ridden Fettle in the Avondale Cup, broke a collarbone in a fall from Sea Contour in the first race. The Finis gelding became a lucky last minute ride for the Australian, M. F. Moore, who handled him admirably. Lochwood, an outsider, was second a length away, and Philadelphia was three-quarters of a length further back third. The double, Fettle and Moon : Crest, paid £Bl 2s for £l. Bigger Weight | A visitor from Hawera, Moon Crest won the Sheriff Handicap on the first day with 8-SJ, and having BJlb more to carry did not stop her making an exhibition of 13 opponents in the Shorts Handicap. Starting the last furlong she ran past the pacemaker, Bell Block, and at the finish she was travelling freely with three lengths and a half to spare. Bell Block was second and Disarm third. The Takanini gelding, Ur and Coming, easily won the Avoidale Guineas. Up and Coming had 15 opponents and he dealt with them convincingly; winning with a little in hand by a length and a quarter. Old Salt finished second and Jalna third. The ground was holding after rain during the week, but the conditions were otherwise favourable with the weather mainly fine and sunny. The totalisator oncourse handled £158,542, including £22,303 on doubles, compared with £168,980 15s last year. The investments for the two days totalled £633,028 ss, against £608,230 last year. Avondale Cup Peter Willonyx, Be Fair, and Yoho began fast in tne Avondale Cup, and Emphatic, Palford and Straight Lead dropped behind. Yoho went on to make the running by two lengths from Loch wood, Be Fair, Fettle, Command Performer, Flying Meteor, Peter Willonyx and Kokiri. Passing the seven furlongs Yoho led by a length, but near the halfmile Be Fair joined him in front. Fettle kept well placed two or three lengths behind the first two and Lochwood, Peter Willonyx, Command Performer, and Peterford (inside) came next. - Yoho gave in as they neared the Straight. Be Fair had command by a couple of lengths from Fettle, then there was a gap to Peter Willonyx, Command Performer. Lochwood, Uppercut and Anyhow. With a little urging. Fettle ran up to Be Fair. Loch wood was very prominent on the inside and Philadelphia began to make ground. Fettle came to the last furlong going well, and he won decisively by a length from Lochwood, which beat Philadelphia by three-quarters of a length for second. Command Performer was fourth, and Be Fair fifth, followed by Uppercut, Anyhow, Kokiri, Peter Willonyx, Yardgar, Flying Meteor. Palford and Peterford.

Emphatic broke , down badly half a mile from the finish, and Straight Lead was tender when eased to a walk in the last 100 yards. Guineas Race From a quick start in the Avondale Guineas Shamus O’Bryan, Dontellus, Nimbula and Up and Coming ran together m front, followed closely by Fountainhead (rails) and Greensleeves (outside). Old Salt came next, then Jafna and Lawful. After half a mile, Dontellus reached the lead, making the pace by a length from Shamus O’Bryan (inside). Greensleeves. Nimbula, Up and Coming, Old Salt, Lawful, and Fountainhead. Shamus O’Biyan. Dontellus, Greensleeves, Lawful, and Up and Coming ran closely packed in front, making the turn into the straight. Up and Coming quickly gathered in the first four. Old Salt made a determined finishing run, but he did not look like overtaking Up and Coming, which won by a length and a quarter. Old Salt was second by half a • length from Jalna. Nerula was fourth and Shamus O’Bryan fifth, then came Fountainhead, which kept close against the rails. My Simon, Lawful, Port Wihe, Fair Filou and Dontellus. Moon Crest’s Win The 14 runners in the Shorts Handicap left quickly to an even start. Sambula was the first to take the lead, and Sunny Bay, Ganymede, Disarm, Melanion, and Bell Block were close behind in the first furlong. Elixir, Otara and Black Raven lost ground Ganymede sprinted to the front nearing the half-mile by two lengths and a half from Bell Block, which was a length ahead of Melanion, Moon Crest, Disarm, Black Raven and Sunny Bay. Bell Block went past Ganymede as they came to the straight. Moon Crest was nicely placed a length behind the first two, and Disarm and Elixir headed the others. Bell Block began to tire when there was a furlong to go. Moon Crest reached the front galloping strongly, and won going away by three lengths and a half from Bell Block, which beat Disarm by half a length for second. Black Seaman made up ground for fourth. Sambula was fifth, then came Elixir, Otara. Royal Crescent, Stawell. Somain and Sunny Bay. Results: — KINGSLAND HURDLES, Of £Bso* about two miles. 8. 9—MAGUIRE’S BRIDGE (10) 9-0 N. D. Riordan 1 1.
