Violence Continues In London
(New Zealand Press Association)
(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 7. Further outbreaks of violence between whites and coloured people occurred in Britain last night.
A bottle fight broke out in asback street in the St Ann’s Well road area df Nottingham, where race riots began two weeks ago.
In London, according to the “Sunday Dispatch,” coloured and white youths brandishing bottles and knives cleared a dance hall, after a dancer had , objected to a coloured pianist.
The Sunday “Dispatch” said girls ran screaming from the dance floor, and the band fled from its platform as tables and chairs were flung, and two teddy boys attacked the coloured pianist with a microphone. Several persons had hands slashed in the fighting before police broke up the disturbance.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) continued his week-end talks at Chequers to find a solution to Britain’s racial problems. New anti-vice laws have been suggested, but the Home Secretary (Mr Butler) has stressed that the Government will not make “rush decisions.”
