Nuclear Reactor Mishap

(Rec. 8 p.m.) OSLO, September 6. Alarm bells sounded today when radioactive water overflowed from a tank in a mountain cave housing Norway’s atomic steam reactor, near Halden, in south-east Norway. But the mishap was discovered In time to prevent the water entering the reactor control room and causing ■ tohsiderable damage to instruments and installations. Repair work was being carried out in the cave and the reactor was not working at the time. ' The overflow occurred when water being used to wash a filtering machine was directed by mistake into tanks containing radioactive waste water from the reactor.

The water had nearly reached the top of the six-inch step barring the way to the control, room when the mistake was discovered. The reactor is designed to produce steam power for use in the wood pulp industry.
