Blenheim Road

Sir,—l am very concerned that the National Roads Board wants to put a road through the park. I hope sincerely that another way can be found as the park is Christchurch’s greatest asset. Surely the motoring public is not always going to have its own way every time. I do wish the Mayor would call a meeting of protest. Hands off the Park for all time.—Yours, etc., WOMAN MOTORIST. August 28, 1958.

Sir, —If members of the Automobile Association think that a road through South Hagley Park is justified because the southwest corner is “not used—not bysporting bodies,’’ let me assure them they are very much mistaken. If these gentlemen ever enjoy the beauties of this corner of the park in spring, summer, or autumn by a stroll on foot, they would see that it is very much used by literally dozens of city athletes in their daily training, all appreciating this facility to the full without the danger and distraction of cars whizzing by on through-park roads. The University CrossCountry Club also conducts a popular harrier race through this corner of the park every year. The Varsity harrier boys are a tough bunch, and they are bound to take a dim view of the Automobile Association’s views.— Yours, etc., SPY. . August 29, 1958.
