U.S. SINGLES TITLES
Seixas Beats Nielsen
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, August 30. The biggest surprise of the first round of the United States men’s singles tennis championship at Forest Hills today was caused by Vic. Seixas, who celebrated his thirtyfifth birthday with a fighting fiveset win over Kurt Nielsen, the Dane who was seeded seventh in the tournament.
Seixas, who beat Nielsen in the Wimbledon final in 1953, and won the United States title in 1954, was not seeded in this tournament, because the seeding committee said it did not have enough data on which to judge his form. The two produced a firsPround match which many spectators considered of final standard.
Ashley Cooper and Neale Fraser, of Australia, both won their firstround matches easily, in three sets. In the women’s section, the champion, Miss Althea Gibson, won her first match easily, as did Miss Christine Truman, of Britain.
