ALL BLACKS CHOSEN

Second Test Team

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. August 31. One new All Black is included in the four replacements* for the team to play the second test against Australia at Christchurch next Saturday. He. is D. L. Ashby (Southland) who comes in as fullback, replacing D. B. Clarke (Waikato) who injured, a hand in the first test at Wellington. The team is:— Full-back: D. L. Ashby (Southland). Three-quarters: R. F. McMullen (Auckland), P. T. Walsh (Counties). J. R. Watt (Wellington). Five-eighths: T. R. Lineen (Auckland), R. H. Brown (Taranaki), vfce-captai n. Half-back: K. R. Davis (Auckland). Forwards: D. J. Graham (Canterbury), E. A. R. Pickering (Waikato), P. F. Jones, (North Auckland), I. N. Mac Ewan (Welling-

ton), C. E. Meads (King Country), W. J. Whineray (Waikato)* captain; D. Young (Canterbury), M. lrwin (Otago).

Reserves: A. Clark (Auckland), R. Cossey (Counties), B. P. J. Molloy (Canterbury), T. D. Coughlan (South Canterbury), A. G. E. Rowlands (Poverty Bay). The other replacements are J. R. Watt (Wellington), -E. A. R. Pickering (Waikato), and M. W. Irwin (Otago). These three have all been members of All Black sides before but for Watt and Pickering this will be their first test match. Irwin has played in three tests—two against Australia in 1955 and one against South Africa in 1956.

Watt and Pickering both toured Australia with A. R. Reid’s 1957 side, but neither played in the tests. Watt was named for both but had to stand down because of a knee infection. Both were members of the team which toured Japan earlier, this year and played in each of the three “tests” then.

Watt replaces R. R. Cossey (Counties) and Pickering goes in in place of Coughlan (South Canterbury). Irwin takes over in the front row in placte of I. J. Clarke (Waikato), who was unavailable for selection because of injury. Ashby, who has. represented the South Island for the last three years, has gone close to All Black selection in other years. He is almost as long a kicker as Clarke, and is also an accurate goal kicker. He and Watt will probably share any goal kicking to be done.
