SUSPENSION OF H-TESTS
U.S. Decision Reported (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 20. The United States had decided on a temporary suspension of atomic weapons tests in hopes that a permanent halt could be arranged under a firm international agreement, informed sources said tonight, the United Press International reported. The report said they indicated that a White House announcement might be forthcoming soon, perhaps tomorrow. The development coincided with an agreement at Geneva between Western and Russian scientists on methods of policing any future nuclear test ban. The American Associated Press reported that the White House declined to confirm or deny that the United States already had agreed to stop tests for the time being.
