U.S. CAMP AT WEEDONS

Wooden Roofs For Huts Bitumenised wooden roofs are being built into the 65 huts at the United States Air Force camp at the R.N.Z.A.F. depot, Weedons, to replace the weather-worn canvas tent roofs which have been used for the last two years—since the first U.S.A.F. squadron was stationed in Christchurch. More than a third of the huts are now roofed, in preparation for the arrival of the advance party of 50 officers and men on Monday. The U.S.A.F. has been negotiating for the lease of the Christchurch City Council’s transit housing settlement at Christchurch airport as a barracks block. If this is obtained it will be next summer, at least, before the squadron can move in. The Globemaster which developed propeller trouble is still grounded at Harewood. A spare is being brought by the Globemaster carrying the advance • party, which left Donaldson, South ' Carolina, yesterday.
