Hockey Australians Win At Te Awamutu
(New Zealand Press Association) TE AWAMUTU, August 21. Better teamwork in the forwards and a very sure defence were the deciding factors in the touring Australian hockey team’s win over Waipa by 3 goals to 1 at Te Awamutu today. All the goals were scored in the first half.
Hard, sure hitting made numerous openings in the Waipa mid-field play. «The best Australian forwards were I. Dick, who scored two opportunist goals, K. Spedding, who was very quick in the circle, and D. Currie. K. Leeson was the best of the halves, and D. Spackman shone at full-back. Spedding was the other scorer.
For Waipa the goalkeeper, D. Goldsmith, was outstanding. J. Barclay showed a fine sense of position, and D Milne and K. Adams were good wing halves. The forwards, led by J. Taylor and P. Burnett, a young player, more than held their own in the first half. Taylor was the Waipa scorer.
