TILE LAYERS’ AWARD
< Wage Increases Granted Wage increases have been granted employees of 12 Christchurch firms, who are under the Canterbury Tile Layers’ Award. The new award, which embodies the terms of settlement arrived at in Conciliation Council and issued by the Court of Arbitration, came into force on July 10. It will remain in force until June 30, 1960. An increase of 3d an hour to 5s 3d an hour has been granted adult workers employed outdoors as roofers or tile fixers, or on tile surrounds and slabs. Assistants working on surrounds and slabs have been given an extra lijd an hour to make their rate 4s BJd an hour. Youths’ wages now range from £3 10s in the first year to £8 10s in the fifth year. After .their fifth year they will be paid adult wages. Improvers engaged in roofing work have been granted an extra 2d an hour, making their hourly rate 4s 6Jd in their first year and rising to 4s 10id in their fourth year. A new clause allows for workers using their own transport during their employer’s time and at his request to be paid 8d a mile for cars and . 3d a mile for bicycles.
