AGREEMENT BY ARABS
“Tension Swept Away” <Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 20. The news that the Arab delegations. including those of Jordan and the Lebanon, had themselves reached private agreements electrified the United Nations Jast night, robbed the Assembly debate of interest, and swept away what little tension thefe had been. Afterwards the headquarters was in festive mood with backslapping delegates congratulating each other and Arab diplomats linking arms. Dr. Charles Malik, the Lebanese Foreign Minister, was exultant as the development was seen to restore his chances of becoming the next President of the Assembly, for which he had been a candidate for more than a year. Differences between his Government and the United Arab Republic had earlier been regarded as severely handicapping Dr. Malik’s prospects.
Mr Selwyn Lloyd, the British Foreign Secretary, was described as being “cock a hoop” at the Arab accord. Mr Hammarskjold himself was said to regard the Arab proposals as good, and as offering him full opportunities for carrying out a constructive peacemaking role. The Assembly was expected to end tomorrow night
