R.N.Z.A.F. WILL SINK HULK
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 19. Some time on Thursday, six aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force will sink a 625ton hulk in 100 fathoms of water near Cuvier island which lies between the Coromandel Peninsula and Great Barrier Island. The hulk, formally the Rimu. will be towed from Auckland by the R.N.Z.N. tug. Otaki. and bombarded with depth charges, bombs and machine gun fire from two Sunderland flying-boats of the Maritime Conversion Unit of Hobson ville, and rockets and cannons of W four Vampire jet fighters of No. 14 (Fighter) Squadron which is based at Ohakea. For the exercise, the jets will operate from Whenuapai. The Rimu was built at Auckland in 1942 as a magnetic minesweeper for the navy. After the war, she was placed in the reserve and later sold to a private firm x . in Auckland which, now that she has reached the end of her useful life, has offered her to the air force for target practice. The sinking was to have taken place yesterday but was postponed because of unsuitable weather.
