Cabinet Approves Project

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 8. The Cabinet has authorised the preparation of plans an*’ the calling of tenders for the first section of the Burnside High School, l to be opened in 1960, and take 350 pupils. The school vill have an ultimate capacity of 850 pupils and is estimated to cost £150,000. The 20-acre site is on the corner of Memorial avenue and Greers road. Advice to this effect was received today by Mr J. T. Watts, the meffiber of Parliament:'for Fendalton, from the Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund). ( The new school will be built on a new standard plan for postprimary schools being developed by the Nelson Education Board. The initial stages of construction will •comprise 17 teaching rooms, an assembly hall, and an administrative block. The school will be multi-course and co-educational.

Discussing the need for further post-primary accommodation in Christchurch, Mr Skoglund today said post-primary rolls in , the district were showing a rapid rise. “The total rolls have risen' from 4297 in 1950 to 7391 in 1958. They are expected to reach. 8800 by 1960 and 11,000 by 1965,” said Mr Skoglund. “Existing Schools and the proposed new school at Aranui will provide permanent accommodation for 8300 pupils. However, another school will be required by 1960. This is the school to be built in Memorial avenue.” The deputy-chairman of the Christchurch, Post - primary Schools’ Council (Professor G. Jobberns) said members would be gratified at the prompt authority to proceed. Besides coping with needs remaining after - the Aranui High School had been opened in 1959. the Burnside High School would relieve existing schools, several of which had accepted extra classes for next .year, he said.
