NEW RAILWAY LINE
Chaneys Deviation > Almost Ready
The railway deviation between Chaneys and Kaiapoi- is expected to be ready for trains late this month. September 1 had been set as a tentative date for the opening of the line, said the district engineer of the Railways Department (Mr G. Shrimpton) yesterday.
Two of the three new bridges required had been completed and all the line laid except the line over the unfinished 125ft' bridge on the Christchurch side of the Waimakariri river, he said
Pile-driving for this bridge was completed this week and all that remains to be done is the laying of the rails, packing and odd details. This should be finished within the next, 14 days.
The two other bridges—the main 1180 ft bridge over'the Waimakariri river and anotfier small 75ft bridge—are ready for use.
Work on the removal of the old railway bridges will begin once the new deviation is opened. “That will be quite a job,” said Mr Shrimpton.
