NEW RECORDS AT UNIVERSITY

Students And Entries For Examinations Records in student enrolments in the numbers sitting examinations will be set by the University of Canterbury by the end of this year. Statistics recompleted exceeded even the expectations of the university authorities, said the Registrar (Mr G. G. Turbott) yester<fay. These figures exceed by more than 100 even the post-war records when actual attendances were artificially swollen by meh whose studies bad been interrupted by military service and others taking up studies, later than usual, through •ervicemen’s bursaries. Examination entries so far have come from 2412 students (compared with 2113 last year) con- , the belief of the ViceChancellor (Dr. F. J. Die welly n) that, besides increased numbers, individual students are taking ®ore subjects for examination, thus aggravating the university’s Problems of accommodation and staffing. Among the entries are:— engineering (professional) examination. 356 (308 last year); fine arts 64 (67); the rest being in ®rts. science, and general subjects. , As an indication of the very Jride range of subjects in which the university will have to prePare examination papers, Mr gave this total as 367.
