Obituary MRS F. L. DAVIES
(New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 8. The death has occurred at Miramar of Mrs Frances Lee Davies. She was 98. Mrs Davies and her husband, who died some years ago, w6re well-known in Southland and were instrumental in starting the sport of lawn tennis in that province.
MISS GERTIE CAMPION (New Zealana Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 7. The Australian-£orn actress, Gertie Campion, has died in Auckland, aged 81. Famous in musical comedy at the turn of the century. Miss Campion had resided in the city for the last five years. In Adelaide, in 1895, Miss Campion had her first big success in musical comedy. As an understudy in J. C. Williamson’s “The Gay Parisienne,’’ she was picked for the leading role when accidents displaced the two leading ladies. A tour of South Africa followed. Miss Campion starred in “The Belle of New York,” r ‘The Geisha” and “La Mascotte.” Her health deteriorated and she came to New Zealand in 1906.
