£50 IN FINES FOR CHINESE
Drew Age Benefit While Working (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 8. An elderly Chinese, thought to be about 80 years old, Gee Poy Wong, a retired fruiterer, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court today to four charges of making false statements under the Social Security Act. The police said that Wong drew a social security age benefit while working as a cook in the Wellington Hospital. Wong was alleged to have told the Social Security Department tha. between August, 1954, and September, 1957, he was not working and had no wages. Mr C. J. Smillie, the police prosecutor, said Wong had drawn £l9lO 10s as a result of the false declarations. He was paid £583 13s 4d in age benefits. Wong bad said he sent the money he had got from working to his wife in China, said Mr Smillie. Mr W. H. Carson, S.M., imposed a fine of £l2 10s on each charge.
