Carlton Traffic Lights
The new traffic control lights at the intersection of Bealey avenue and Victoria street-Papanui road are expected to operate today. The exact time will depend on the completion of road marking. The traffic capacity of the intersection will be increased by the creation of more lanes, and this is the reason for the extra marking The City Council traffic department now warns motorists that they should look out for the control lights operating in case habitual users forget that they have been installed. Extended Visit Members of the Wanganui Jockey Club devoted a great deal of time at their annual meeting last night to the question of keeping unauthorised persons out of the members’ stand. To emphasise that members who secured tickets for unauthorised persons were largely to blame, the secretary quoted a case where the privilege had been sought for a visitor from Ireland. The ticket was supplied and'it was some time before it became known that the Irishman’s visit to New Zealand had already extended over a period of 45 years.—(P.A.) Indescribable No satisfactory descriptions are available for many varieties of plums grown in New Zealand, according to the report of the Department, of Scientific and Industrial Research, presented to the House of Representatives. Most plums grown here were of the Japanese type, but the lack of satisfactory descriptions within this group had led to confusion at all stages of plumgrowing, the report said. The Fruit Research Division had started to sort out some 60 varieties of Japanese plums z ‘to meet the basic need of the stone fruit industry.”
New Potatoes There are still good supplies of bananas available in Christchurch. Another shipment is due in the Matua, which will arrive in Lyttelton some time next week. One market yesterday sold new season’s potatoes for 7d and 8d per lb The auctioneer considered this a very cheap price. They ’ were dearer at the beginning of the season last year.
Teachers Warned Teachers are warned, in an official circular this week, against applying for new positions when they are not assured of housing. The Education Department says that withdrawals for this reason and applications for release from the two-year service clause cause inconvenience, expense, and delays in settling appointments. It is suggested that anyone with doubts should make provisional applications, subject to housing, or defer applying until assured that accommodation will be available. Close Friends During the planting of a ginkgo tree to the memory of Mr Harry Tillman, at St. James’s Park, yesterday, the president of the Papanui Beautifying Association (Mr J. Sturrock) said he and Mr Tillman had been neighbours for many years. “We were close friends—so close that we didn’t have a fence between us.”
