Obituary MR J. N. IRVINE
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, August 6.
A well known resident of Hamilton, Mr James Neil Irvine, has died, aged 75 years. Mr Irvine was born in Sydney, and came to New Zealand as a child. He served his apprenticeship as a pharmaceutical chemist in Wellington, and, when he had qualified, he opened a chemist’s shop in Reefton, where he remained for 12 years. Coming to Hamilton in 1919, Mr Irvine was in business as a chemist from that time until he retired recently. For 43 years, in Reefton and Hamilton, Mr Irvine served as a volunteer member of the fire brigade. He was deputy superintendent of the Hamilton brigade when he retired a few years ago, and he was awarded the fireman’s gold badge and other decorations in recognition of his service as a fireman.
