H.M.N.Z.S. Tasman Gone

The last building from the H.M.N.Z.S. Tasman establishment at Lyttelton was removed from the site yesterday in two sections and transported over Evans Pass to Sumner and then on to Halkett. Mr A. M. Gibbs, the building contractor who moved the building, said he had no difficulty in negotiating the road with the 17ftwide buildings. The road from Lyttelton to Evans Pass was closed while the sections were transported up the hill at 5 m.p.h. At the top, the transporters waited while traffic passed over. Then the road to the foot of the hill was closed to allow the vehicles to reach the bottom. On narrower parts of the road on the Lyttelton side the buildings had only inches to spare on either side. The buildings left Lyttelton at 10.45 a.m. and, after a halt in Moorhouse avenue while the drivers had lunch in Hagley Park, they reached Halkett at 2.30 p.m. They were left in the school ground at Halkett, where the buildings will be used as a hall for local meetings.
