RECORDS FALL AT SWIMMING

Four young English girls knocked three seconds off the world women’s 440 yards medley relay swimming record at the final swimming events of the Games last night. Judy Grinham. Anita Lonsborough. Christine Gosden and Diana Wilkinson won one of the greatest rdees of the Games swimming events. They and the Australian team, which finished second, beat the world record for the relay. Miss Grinham equalled her own world 110 yards backstroke mark, set only 48 hours previously, and Australia’s Dawn Fraser swam the 110 yards freestyle in the fastest time ever by a woman—6o.7sec. Hsa Konrads (Australia) also set a record in the 440 yards freestyle.

The Canadian women's team was third in the relay well clear of the New Zealand team of Philippa Gould, Kay Sawyers. Tessa Staveley, and Jennifer Hunter. Philippa Gould swam'her backstroke leg in 74.9sec—1.2sec slower than when she won a bronze medal on Wednesday. She finished the lap fourth, and the New Zealand team remained in that position for the rest of the laCe - - • 4U Miss Sawyers, swimming tne breaststroke leg, made up some ground on Australia and Canada, and Tessa Staveley on the butterfly lap, maintained the position, but on the final lap. Miss Hunter lost 3sec on the Canadians. The New Zealand lap times were: Backstroke 74.95ec, breaststroke 86.9 sec. butterfly 74.8 sec. freestyle 69.8 sec.
