NEW JUDGE APPOINTED
Mr R. H. Boys, Of Wellington (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 23. The appointment of Mr Reginald Hardie Boys, Q.C.. of Wellington, to the Supreme Court Bench was announced tonight by the Attorney-General (Mr Mason) The new Judge is expected to take up his duties in Auckland during the coming month. Mr Justice Boys was born at Otautau, Southland, in 1903, the son of the Rev. F. W. Boys and Mrs Boys. He received his secondary education at the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. Apart from absence on active service with the New Zealand armed forces in the Pacific during the Second World War, Mr Justice Boys has been in continuous practice, either on his own account or as the senior partner in his firm, for the 33 years immediately preceding his appointment, this year, as a Queen’s Counsel. He has devoted the major part of that time to practice in the Courts and, of late years, to appearances in the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. He has acted on instructions from the Crown before the Parliamentary Committee on the Film Industry and the Tangiwai district inquiry and has appeared before many other commissions and tribunals. He has served on the councils of the New Zealand Law Society and the Wellington District Law Society and was president of the latter society in 1954.
The new Judge has also been active in community affairs, notably in the Returned Services Association—of which he was Wellington president some years ago—the Conscientious Objection Committee and the Wellington District Rehabilitation Committee. In church affairs he has filled, amongst other offices, that of circuit steward of the Methodist Church in Wellington.
