Trap Shooting High Standard At South Island Championships

DUNEDIN, July 18. Brilliant sunshine and a complete absence of wind ensured perfect concfitions for the opening day of the 1958 South Island clay target championships at the Dunedin Gun Club’s shooting grounds in Brighton road today. A large number of trapshooters representing most of the districts in the South Island, as well as some from the North Island, took part. The double rise championship of 20 targets was won by C. W. Stott (Kimberley), who had to shoot off with J. C. Geddes (Green Island) and J. C. Streeter (Amberley). These three shooters shot well to score 19 targets, and in the shoot-off over an additional 10 targets, Stott sustained his form to break the extra 10. Geddes was second.

D. G. Wareham (Blenheim) won his fifth South Island skeet championship. Wareham is the present holder of the national skeet title. He missed his first target and then broke the remaining 24, to score the same as B. G. Begg (Kirwee), J. McKenzie (Seaward Downs). W. Morton (Blenheim), W. J. Stone (Temuka), and L. G. Taylor (Oamaru). A shbot-off was held, and Wareham scored a possible. McKenzie was second and Wareham’s pupil, W. Morton, third with a score of 23. The tournament ends tomorrow when the South Island single rise championship will be held.
