Police Road Blocks
Sir,—l agree that the present police road blocks are useless. The day the escaped prisoner was caught in Kaiapoi I drove from Belfast to Kaiapoi. When I crossed the Waimakariri bridge, a constable in uniform was standing at the northern end. I was not stopped. My truck has a deep well-side body with stock hurdles on the sides and front. The back was open. On my way north I was away from the truck for 10 minutes at Chaneys corner. The prisoner could have got in then and lain on the floor. In Kaiapoi I was away from the truck for 30 minutes. It may have been I who carried the prisoner past the road block.—Yours, etc-. A FARMER. June 26, 1958. [The superintendent of police in Christchurch (Mr D. R. Sugrue) said a letter similar to this was published and replied to in “The Press” of June 26, 1958, and had no further comments to make.]
