Second Leg At Avondale (“The Press” Special Service) AUCKLAND. July 4. Straight Lead, which will be improved by his run in the Rawson Memorial Handicap on the first day, when he ran fourth, may win the Churchill Handicap on the second day of the Avondale Jockey Club’s winter meeting tomorrow. Anzio is in popular favour for the race, and Kokiri will also have his admirers. The Churchill Handicap will be the first leg of the double. Sambula, a local candidate from F. J. and B. M. Docherty’s stable, is strongly fancied for the second leg. the Telegraph Handicap, and indications are that he will start at short odds. Last week he managed the Telegraph Handicap course impressively for a decisive victory in the President’s Handicap. Indian Mars is a prominent candidate. and another is the top-weight, Otara. Since the first day last Saturday the weather has been mainly showery, keeping the ground heavy. Selections:— 11 a.m.—Whau Steeplechase: Merrywynn, Jewel Denby, Diecast. 11.45 a.m.—First New Lynn Handicap: Vivian, Rose FHou, Sable King. 12.25 p.m.—Bledisloe Hack Hurdles: Delinquency, Region, Macbeth. 1.15 p.m.—Churchill Handicap: Straight Lead, Anzio, Kokiri. 2 p.m.—Second New Lynn Handicap: Murvale, Mon Espoir, Tarry Town. 2.50 p.m.—Telegraph Handicap: Sambula, Indian .Mars, Otara. 3.35 p.m.—Waitemata Hack Handicap: Clymon, Fairy Mist, Peter Quex. 4.25 p.m.—Grey Lynn Handicap: I Victorina, Helenita, My Kingdom.
