Lawn Tennis WOMEN’S SINGLES AT WIMBLEDON
A. Mortimer And A. Gibson In Final (N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. July 3. Althea Gibson, of the United States, and Angela Mortimer, of Britain, today qualified for the women’s singles final in the Wimbledon tennis championships on Saturday. Miss Gibson beat 19-year-old British left-hander, Ann Haydon, 6-2. 6-0, in 33 minutes. Miss Mortimer took two minutes less to beat Mrs Suzy Kormoezy (Hungary), 6-0, 6-1, to become the second British finalist in three years. Miss Gibson took the first set in 19 minutes, breaking service in the third and seventh games. In the runaway second set she had such dominance that she conceded only 10 points. The men’s doubles semi-final-ists are. in draw order:—
Davidson - Schmidt (Sweden), Pietrangeli-Sirola (Italy), Mackay (United States)-Rose (Australia!, and Cooper-Fraser (Australia). Cooper and Fraser, who already hold the doubles title of the United States. Australia, and France, today had their final hit up before their clash in the singles final tomorrow.
