ABOLITION OF C.M.T.
Defence League’s Telegram
The president of the New -Zealand Defence League (Sir William Perry) today sent the following letter to the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly): “The New Zealand Defence League is deeply concerned at the statement which you are reported to have made last Friday that Major-General C. E. Weir was happy with what was in the White Paper and that he would carry out the policy of the Government. The Defence League does not doubt that Major-Gen-eral Weir will loyally endeavour to carry out the policy of the Government, but your statement implies that he is personally in favour not only of the regular brigade group scheme but of the abolition of Compulsory military training. “I wish therefore, on behalf of the Defence League io request you to state publicly whether Major-General Weir is personally in agreement that C.M.T. should be abolished. I am sending a copy of this letter to the press.”
