REACTION IN BRITAIN

“American View Shared” LONDON, July 4. The “Daily Mail” says that British Intelligence men are inclined to share the American reaction that the letter is a fake. They note that the letter contains two phrases which suggested that it was not written by an American. In one paragraph the letter refers to “the N.A.T.0.” Most people just say “N.A.T.O” in the same way as they speak of U.N. or 5.E.A.T.0., without the definite article. In another paragraph appears the phrase “as soon as we will have crossed your boundaries.” This, the newspaper says, is a grammatical error common to people whose mother tongue is not English. A United States Air Force spokesman has said that the anonymous letter “does not appear to be valid.” He said that all American airfields in the Ipswich area were fighter stations. The spokesman commented: “Fighters are capable of carrying atomic bombs, but they are manned by only one person, and it would be impossible fot an individual to deliver such a weapon. “Our precautions are designed to prevent anybody's doing such a thing.”
