PHYSICAL CULTURE
First Night Of Festival A cavalcade depicting various aspects of physical activities from infancy to adulthood was shown when the Civic Theatre’s newblue and grey curtain swept open on the 1958 Festival of Physical Education last evening. The Festival was presented by the Physical Education Society of New Zealand, and will end tonight.
The undoubted highlight.on last evening’s programme was a display with three hoops by a young member of Buckett’s gymnasium. Later in the programme, the gymnasium was warmly applauded for an outstanding display of pyramid work, tumbling and flipflaps.
In a confined space, pupils of the Christchurch Boys’ High School expertly carried out some high-jumping. Two members of the University of Canterbury’s fencing club showed their skill at fencing, and men of the university’s basketball club played a short game. Infants of the Spreydon school provided the audience with several minutes of amusement, as they carried out activities normally undertaken during their physical training lessons. Maori rhythm with pois, was demonstrated by girls of the Te Wai Pounamu College, and rhythmical dancing was performed by Rangi-ruru pupils. Wrestlers from the Christchurch Technical College gave a more convincing display of the sport than recent professionals have given in the city during the last few weeks.
The programme ended with a display of special tests which will soon be conducted in local secondary schools to determine the physical abilities of the children.
