Natella’s Fine Sprint In Work At Riccarton

Natella showed her fitness for the Taiko Hack Handicap at Washdyke by running the fastest half-mile of the training at Riccarton yesterday. Ridden by E. G. Low, she sped over that distance on the No. 1 grass in 50 2-ssec, and did her work well. Natella got down on her float on the trip to Washdyke last Saturday and did not race with her usual dash. Purser (N. Eastwood), a fit Riccarton candidates for the Whyte Handicap at Trentham, was eager to increase speed while running half a mile in 53 3-ssec. He has thrived since his win at Ashburton and should offer strong opposition for the North Island milers. McCool (G. W. Mein), going well under a good hold, led Petty Officer (L. McGuire) by two lengths ending six furlongs in Imin 21sec. The pace slackened in the straight, and the last half-mile took 54 l-ssec. . Medbury reduced her lead to half a length near the end. Royal Regent (N. Cowles) and Refugee (E. G. Low) sprinted five furlongs on terms, the last four taking 52 3-ssec. It was a good gallop for non-winners. Hopeful (A. J. Stokes) and Panoramic (N. Cowles) sprinted away from the six furlongs and home from the half-mile in 53sec. Mexico (J. L. Coulter) showed ability when tested over the pony hurdles. His form in hack sprints has improved in his last two starts, and he may take beating in the Taiko Hack Handicap at Washdyke.
