Pink Rose Favoured At Washdyke

Pink Rose is well capable of making a successful return to winning form in the Doncaster Handicap on the second day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting tomorrow.

She won brilliantly over a mile at Ashburton two starts back and was fourth last Saturday when tested for stamina in the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap, run over 11 furlongs and 150 yards. Th field is of unwieldy size and those slow to reach speed will have heavy work ahead of them.

was a strongly-finishing fifth over 11 furlongs at the Ashburton winter meeting. Form Runners The Southland galloper Brooke is a form runner after a third on the first day of the meeting, and a second at Oamaru. Another is Appreciate, which did not get a trouble-free run last Saturday, when fifth. There was merit also in Beau Revere’s fourth last Saturday but he will start from tfie outside barrier position tomorrow, and that will demand a superb effort. Subside and Smart are capable newcomers at the meeting. Subside was switched from sprinting to middle distance racing with encouraging results in the Oamaru Winter Cup, in which she was a fairly close sixth under 9-1. She weakened slightly that day bift should be running on at the end of a mile and 35 yards. Second Leg

Pink Rose has had good fortune, having drawn the No. 9 barrier position. Less fortunate are the Riccarton milers Keep Time and

Natella, Kelton, and Timely Boy may be the best of the hack sprinters in the Taiko Handicap, the second leg of the main double. Natella, at best, is a dogged finisher, and 8-11 should not dim her brilliance if she is at her best. Kelton was a double acceptor but has dropped out of the field for the Strathallan Hack Handicap. Timely Boy lost his chance at the start of the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting. Two starts ago he was a winner at Ashburton, beating Natella and Hannibal into the minor places.

the bracketed pair, Her Ex and Cruising, all form runners. In the circumstances, Riccarton’s best may be McCool, a powerful galloper on. the minimum. McCool, has not cleared hack class blit in running third in the New Zealand Derby last November and at times in races since then, he has shown considerable ability. He won brilliantly over a mile at Oamaru two starts back and
