C.M.T. “A WASTE OF TIME”
Replacement By Specialists
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 3. The view that if compulsory military training is to be done away with it should be replaced by a cadre of highly trained specialist personnel is held by the Dominion executive of the 2nd. N.Z.E.F. Association.
In a statement tonight the executive said C.M.T. was a waste of time. Trainees spent two or three months in camp using antiquated weapons and ‘‘peeling spuds.” “Today, warfare is not so much a matter of soldier-to-soldier contact but of a highly mobile defensive force free to retaliate if a blow comes,” it said. “New Zealand is largely dependent on her neighbours and the Commonwealth for defence.” the statement New Zealand’s own defence should, of necessity, be concentrated on the air arm—an air force and an airborne striking force. “Coupled with this, the emphasis should be on physical fitness and training with key weapons.” said the statement.
