NEW HARBOUR WORKS

Dispute Over Land

Formal notice of the intention of the Lyttelton Harbour Board to take eight acres and a half of land adjacent to the new harbour works and owned by the Lyttelton Borough Council, under the Public Works Act, was received by the Borough Council last evening. A letter written before the issue of the notice from the secretarymanager of the board (Mr A. L Burk) said that the terms of transfer of the land, as set out in the council's letter, were quite unacceptable to the board. It was regretted, said Mr Burk, that the council was not prepared to agree to arbitration in terms of the board’s empowering act. “However,” concluded the letter, “the board has the right to proceed under the Public Works Act, and while it is reluctant to take action in such a manner against another local authority, it feels that there is no alternative in view of the attitude your council has adopted.” He did not consider, it a friendly act on the part of the board, said Cr. W. Morris. His

motion, that a sub-committee be appointed to go into ways and means of objecting to the board’s taking the land was carried, the sub-committee to consist of the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs) and Crs. A. M. Miller and W. Morris.
