UNDERWATER RESCUE
(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI, June 23.
A spear fisherman, Bert Whistler, of Auckland, was nearly drowned at Matapouri, 23 miles from Whangarei, at the week-end.
He was some distance from other members of his party when he got into difficulties with his artificial lung. He was discovered by one of the party standing on the sea bed semi-conscious with his mask off. Mr Whistler was taken from the water, taken by truck to the Matapouri store and then by ambulance to the Whangarei Hospital, where his condition today was reported as serious, but improving.
