ELECTION IN PORTUGAL
Candidate Seeks Annulment (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright! LISBON, June 22 The defeated Opposition candidate, General Humberto Delgado, has asked President Lopes to annul Portugal’s Presidential elections. He asked for the annulment in a memorandum “in view of the numerous illegalities before and during the election.” The Government-backed candidate, General Americo Thomas, won the election. An Interior Ministry communique said that extremist elements were trying to provoke strikes against alleged irregularities in the elections. Recently there had been some attempts to strike in small industries in Almada and Villa Franca de Xira. Some fishermen at Matozinhos were also out on strike, but most workers had not responded to the appeals for disorder, the Ministry said. ' President Lopes will remain in office until his successor is installed.
