Golf N.Z. TEAM FOR ST. ANDREWS
Manager Optimistic (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 23.
Mr J. A. Scouler, of Dunedin, has been appointed manager of the New Zealand golf team to take part in the inaugural world tournament at St. Andrew’s from October 8 to 11. A national selector, Mr Scouler is optimistic about the team’s chances.
Few persons realise that New Zealand has the fifth largest golf playing membership of all the countries in the world and just how high the amateur standard is in the Dominion, he said this morning.
The only countries with more golfers than New Zealand were the United States (5 million players), the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, according to the latest census.
R. J. Charles, J. D. Durry. S. G. Jones, and E. J. McDougall, the members of the New Zealand team, were all extremely strong medal players, he said, and could be relied on to do well in the world tournament.
