WARNING SIGNS ON ROADS
Proposal For Storm Conditions Temporary notices warning 2 motorists of bad or impossible conditions ahead could save a lot of difficulty for everyone. Mr L, W. Broadhead said at a meeting of the Automobile AssociatioJ, (Canterbury) last evening. referred particularly to the heeyvsnow on the Lewis Pass at the Queen’s Birthday week-end. .fj? The seriousneses of the snow could not be gauged three miles from the ton hut so. whem motorists found themselves in six inches of loose snow or on slip, pery compacted tracks, there wu not much they could do but wait • for assistance. Mr Broadhead said, ’ The A.A. patrol had done a splendid job in helping motorists. fooG bailers also assisted; but if driv» ers could have been warned before they apnroached the trichy stretch all this bother might have been averted. Farther back there was at least room to manoeuvre; but once on to the deep snow (with buses and cars behind) a driver was obliged to stop and wait for help.
If the association had not been so heavily committed in providing heln on Arthuers Pass, there would have been a second utility; vehicle at Lewis Pass, said the secretary (Mr E. S. Palliser). ft. should be realised that even the,A.A. had little warning thatvLewis Pass conditions would de* teriorate so quickly. By radio telephone, reports were sent back to headquarters immediately go that motorists could be warned ’ before they got too far. The council agreed that Mr Palliser should investigate Mr Broadhead's suggestion, and* » also passed a resolution ing service officers on their mag* nificent efforts in all parts of Caw» terbury and Westland during the Queen’s Birthday week-end. ■'
