Migrants From Australia (New Zealand Press Association) > WELLINGTON, June 23. Australian migrants were continuing their increased flow to find work in New Zealand, £aid the Assistant Secretary of Labour (Mr H. Parsonage) today. He said that 31 workers registered in Auckland after a recent arrival of the Monowai from Sydney. About half of the 31 seeking employment were labourers. The others were semi-skilled mechanics, a porter and six clerks. “There is no difficulty in finding work for tradesmen,” he said. “Things are getting more difficult for the unskilled as there are nowhere near as many jobs offering today.” Mr Parsonage said that unemployment figures were believed to be about 80,000 in Australia, with about 20,000 persons on some form of relief benefit. “For many years we had a net loss of workers to Australia,” he said. “For the last two years the figures have been reversed and they have increased over the last 18 months.” There were no restrictions on Australian migrants seeking work in New Zealand, he said.
