Imre Nagy

Sir, —The letters printed from Communists or their sympathisers applauding the murder of Imre Nagy are a clear warning to the people of the free world of how minds can become warped under the influence of the gruesome creed of communism. The attempt to drag in the Rosenbergs’ trial is, of course ridiculous. Unlike Imre Nagy, the Rosenbergs did at least have a fair and public trial. It would be interesting to see how the Hungarian workers would vote on this question, but as voting is not free even at election time, this would be too much to hope for.—Yours, etc., L. JONES. June 22, 1958.

Sir, —P.J.A.’s letter shows little sympathy towards the Hungarian people. May I ask if P.J.A. were a Hungarian, he would like to be dominated by a foreign armed force, many members of which I am led to believe are not even capable of acting within the rules of moral discrimination? Undoubtedly many “good people” (from Russia’s point of view) were killed in the Hungarian uprising, but was it a Fascist element? I beg to differ. Perhaps it was a Nationalist one and why not? Hungarians are educated people who, before World War 11, had proved perfectly capable of managing their own affairs—in a democraticmanner—without Russian domination and the pseudo-dictator-ship of a few of their own Quislings.—Yours, etc., R.I.P. June 20, 1958.

Sir, —for some time I have noted letters signed P.J.A. and can only conclude it is time he moved off to China or Russia, as there just cannot be anything about our way of life he could possibly appreciate; apart from the fact that he is provided with a job. If P.J.A. should gather enough courage eventually to live in one of the two countries that he is always putting forward as a wonderful example to us, he would not be able to shoot his piouth off as he has here in “The Press,’’ about Imre Nagy and other subjects. He would be shot smartly.— Yours, etc., LOYAL KIWI. June 22, 1958.
