Three Teams In Lead
The leading team, Beckenham, suffered its first defeat in’ the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s winter mixed competition at Wilding Park on Saturday. University A, which has not lost a match but which has one to play, beat Beckenham by 5 matches to 1. Three teams—University A, University B and Beckenham—are now in the lead University B, North Linwood and c outh Christchuich also won on Saturday. Po nts are:—University A 5, University B 5, Beckenham 5, North Linwood 3, St. Albans 2, South Christchurch 2, Barrington 2, Linwood Avenue 0. Linwood Avenue has two matches to play .and University A and Barrington have one match to play. Results:— Barrington v. University B Men’s Singles.—R. Smith lost to G. Bryant, 0-6, 3-6; C. Cook lost to B. Stringer, 0-6, 4-6. Women’s Singles.—Miss M. Gorrie lost to Miss J. Cromb, 1-6, 3-6; Miss K. Adam lost to Miss M. Tyndall. 5- 4-6. Mixed Doubles.—Smith and Miss Gorrie lost to Bryant and Miss Cromb, 7-5, 1-6, 1-6; Cook and Miss Adam lost to Stringer and Miss Tyndall, 3-6, 4-6. University B won by 6 matches to 0. Linwood Avenue v. North Linwood Men’s Sngles.—B. Reid beat B Prisk, 6-4, 6-1; M. Mitchell lost to J. Browne, 1-6, 3-6. Women’s Singles.—Mrs Edan beat Miss F. Adams, 6-1. 6-1; Miss G. Harrison lost to Miss J. Walmsley, 0-6, 1-6. Mixed Doubles.—Reid and Mrs Edan beat P isk and Miss Adams, 4-6, 8-6, 6-2; Mitchell and Miss Harrison lost to Browne and Miss Walmsley, 3-6, 1-6. North Linwood won by 7 sets to 6 St. Albans. v. South Christchurch Men’s Singles.—C. Giles lost to K. Henderson, 2-6, 4-6; J. Rowe lost to R. Whitley, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. Women’s Singles.—Miss J. Hatch lost to Mrs G. Robinson, 0-6, 4-6; Miss J. Burgess lost to Mrs L. Finney, 0-6, 4-6.-Mixed Doubles. —Giles and Miss Hatch lost to Henderson and Mrs Robinson, 3-6, 2-6; Rowe and Miss Burgess lost to Whitley and Mrs Finney. 3-6, 2-6. South Christchurch won by 6 matches to 0. University A v. Beckenham Men’s Singles.—D. Marshall beat M. Crampton, 9-11, 10-8, 6-3; M. Crozier lost to M. Neill. 3-6, 3-6. Womens Singles.—Miss Diane Souter beat Miss M. Shanahan, 6-1, 6- Miss Denise Souter beat Miss G. Freear, 6-0, 9-7. Mixed Doubles. —Marshall and Miss Souter beat Crampton and Miss Freear, 6-2, 6-3; Crozier and Miss Denise Souter beat Neill and Shanahan, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. University A won by 5 matches to 1.
QUEEN’S CLUB TITLES
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 21, Mai Anderson, of Australia, the second seed for the Wimbledon championships next week, won the London singles title at Queen's Club today. He beat another Australian, Bob Mark, 1-6, 11-9, 6-3, in the final.
The 20-year-qld South African champion. Miss 'Bernice Carr, won the women’s singles. Miss Carr beat the American, Miss Margaret Varner, 6-4, 5-7, 8-6.
