REMBRANDTS FOR DISPLAY

Exhibit Of Prints In Canterbury

During August, residents of Canterbury will have the opportunity of seeing about 160 reproductions of paintings by Rembrandt, the famous Dutch master. The collection has been sent to New Zealand by the Netherlands Ministry of Education and includes a large colour print of Rembrandt’s celebrated “The Night Watch.” Rembrandt was one of the world’s greatest painters and also one of the finest etchers. His works are to be found throughout Europe and in Britain. Important American galleries also have some of his masterpieces. Rembrandt, who was born in 1606, was the son of a miller. He achieved fame at an early age but, though he enjoyed wealth and popularity, he had outlived his popularity when he died in 1669. In the years since then his name has became renowned throughout the world.
