CURRENT NOTES

Mr Owen R. Jones, secretary of the Christchurch Welsh Society, was recently elected a vicepresident of the Union of Welsh People in Dispersion, at Abberystwyth, Wales. Lady Megan Lloyd George is president of this world-wide movement. The announcement of Mr Jones’ appointment was made at a recent meeting of the society, when the president (Mr James Griffiths) welcomed Dr. Gordon Parker and Mrs Parker to the society.

The final of the national debating competition of the New Zealand Federation of Country Girls’ Clubs, which was held in conjunction with the federation’s annual conference in Wellington, was won by Feilding C.G.C. The leader of the Feilding team, Miss J. Collis, was judged the best speaker. About 200 country girls from all over New Zealand attended the 4-day conference, which was held in the Concert Chamber of the Wellington Town Hall. Officers elected were as follows: —president, N. Burnside, Hillend; advisory members, Mrs W. Johnson (Irwell), and Mrs N. Mathieson (Clinton); Dominion executive, Misses E. Harris (Ongarue), P. Shallard (New Plymouth), H. Alexander (Eltham), J. Bicknell (Kairanga), S. Dickie (Waitane), R. Gilbert (Ellesmere), E. Jackson (Ohoka), and Mrs J. Chittock (Waikaka Valley). The 1959 conference will be held at Picton.

The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Old Time Dance Association held recently:—president, Mr W. Tate; vice-presidents, Mrs M. Martin and Mr A. Chidgey: secretary-treasurer, Mrs M. Thompson; assistant secretary, Mr E. Bensen; committee, Mesdames McKay, Cooke, Clark, Oliver, Jury, Messrs Wallace, Hume, Baker, Hood, Genet.

A record attendance of members and guests of the Christchurch branch of the League for the Hard of Hearing recently heard an ear, nose and throat specialist give a talk on surgery for deafness. The specialist described the fenestration operation and the new operation known as mobilisation of the stapes. A party of members of the newlyformed Ashburton branch made a special visit to Christchurch to hear the talk. Mr R. McGregor, the secretary of the branch, welcomed the guests and introduced the speaker.
