MR HANDFIELD’S VISIT

Plunket Society’s Announcement

An Australian public relations officer with wide experience in working with hospitals, trade organisations, private companies and other organisations, will visit Christchurch soon. He is Mr John Handfield, managing director of the Melbourne firm of John and Esta Handfield, Ltd.

Mr Handfield will be the guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Plunket Society to be held at the Jellicoe Hall in July. This was announced at a recent meeting of the branch when members were told that Mr Handfield was public relations consultant for the Victorian Employers’ Federation and a member of the Develop Victoria Council.

The council, with strong community support, helps specific projects in any area. It has established the State suggestion box, a pillar box inviting ideas from the public, and the community service award for citizens who help the development of the State, says a report from the meeting.

It was also reported at the meeting that a leading Christchurch retail firm would hold a millinery parade of new spring hats in aid of Plunket funds next month.

The president (Mrs A. Rose) welcomed new members and representatives of sub-branches. The Matron of Karitane Hospital reported for the month as follows:—Number of mothers admitted, 14; babies. 29: number of mothers discharged, 15. babies. 28: number of twins admitted, three sets: number of premature babies admitted. 14: discharged, 10. The matron acknowledged, with thanks, a box of bootees, bibs and feeders from the Mayfield branch of the Federated Farmers, and a box of vests from the Country Women’s Institute at Tekapo. The committee acknowledged, with thanks, donations from the following sub-branches:— Woolston. £5 ss: Chorlton-Little Akaloa. £2su Okain’s Bav £5: Shirlev Mothers’ Club, £5; Fairlie, £10: and Sockburn, £6.

The Charge Sister reported cases for the month as follows: Number ’of new baby cases, 285: number of visits to babies in homes. 2013: number of visits ofbabies to Plunket rooms, 3330.
