Meteors are initially tiny bits of metal or stone called meteoroids. When one of these objects strikes the relatively dense atmosphere of the earth at speeds ranging from 10 to 40 miles a second, the friction between air and meteoroid causes both to become incandescent and usually destroys the meteoroid. About 20 tim.es a year, the earth in its journey around the sun encounters a concentrated stream of meteoroids. The result is a shower in which as many as from 10 to 50 meteors may be seen in an hour
