BETTING PLUNGE ON SUMMALU

Narrow Win At Brisbane

The New Zealand-bred galloper, Summalu,. landed a betting coup when he beat Macdougal, also bred in New Zealand, .by a nose to win the 11-furlong Moreton Handicap at Eagle Farm yesterday. Betters from Victoria poured money on to Summalu, causing his price to tumble from 7-2 to 2-1, at which price he started favourite. With 150 yards to go, the two horses raced head and head for the post. Summalu, ridden desperately by R. Hutchinson, got his head in front, and Macdougal’s finishing bid just failed. Gulf Boy was a long neck away third. The New Zealand-bred Neptunist gave his backers no cause for concern in stylishly winning the J. Cadell-Garrick Handicap, over one mile.

The top Sydney jockey, George Moore, had Neptunist sinartly away and allowed the horse to dash to the lead at the furlong post. Neptunist went on to win by three-quarters of a length, with a short head separating the second and third place-get-ters, Damaji and Beau Pierre. Neptunist's win completed a winning double for Moore, who had earlier won the mile and a half Queensland Oaks on Orient. Orient, which started at 2-1 on, toyed with her opposition before dashing clear to win by three lengths in race record time of 2min 32 l-ssec.
